Background

The United States Army grapples with the real-world challenges where life hangs in the balance. New and better ways to train soldiers so the first deployment feels like the second. Training is critical to the Army's mission in Iraq, Afgahnistan and beyond and is key to developing today's modern warfighter.

Challenge

The project involved building a training program for the United States Army that leveraged technology to transfer knowledge in scenario-based engagements. The user needed to see real-time results and the scenario's path needed to be adjusted based on the decision made by that same user.

Results

We built the Leader Challenge, an online tool for scenario-based training for knowledge transfer. Early test on West Point cadets proved sucessful and the Army is currently integrating the Leader Challenge across several organizations.

Solution

A group of former Army commanders worked with VLG, the Praevius Group and the U.S. Army approached Vialuna Technology to assist them in the creation of the interactive training platform. The objective of the application for the US Army was to measure each participant's interaction with the online challenges including the measurement of the level of participation, knowledge retention and tacit knowledge transfer related to complex and critical decision making situations.

Vialuna Technology developed a web-based application with the following key components:

  • Deliver actual stories and experiences into a multimedia vignette that included raw imagery, live video and accounts from the actual soldiers that encountered the various situations
  • Feedback, metrics, and shared experience information are delivered and received in an automated fashion
  • Online survey function for post training session assessment of the Cadet's knowledge retention and other key data points for valuable research and tracking
  • Offline analysis of key data points used to complete a comprehensive assessment presented to the US Army Research Institute

Vialuna Technology provided the following services and technologies:

  • Custom application development
  • User interface design and usability
  • Content development
